Rehabilitation Rubbers (Theraband / Theratubes)

You gotta door? You gotta gym.. You may have heard of that famous American advertisement and in this case if you do have a door (and a theraband) you do have a gym. The humble rubber theraband/tube is a really great tool that we have at our disposal. Just simply tie one end of the band to a door or a table leg and away you go.

As Physiotherapists, we are experts at improving control and strength at all joints. With the aid of therabands we are able to isolate specific muscles and work primarily on their anatomical actions. This is a critical component to early rehabilitation especially in the post operative patient.

Not only are these simple products great for improving specific muscular strength but they can be used to stretch out muscles. These bands will also give you a low impact aerobic workout. Coming in different colours, thickness and resistance these bands are a cheap and functional way of rehabilitating or preventing your injury.

Spiky Balls/Foam Rollers

By using the Foam Roller or a Spiky ball you are using your own body weight to mimic a deep tissue massage or trigger point release. There has been some sound evidence which show that there are multiple benefits from self-release. Whilst the exact reason for these benefits are unknown there has been some links to increased blood flow, muscle relaxation and tissue extensibility.

Foam rollers are excellent tools and should be used in the warm up and cool down prior to playing sport. Common areas that the roller works extremely well on include the Quadriceps, Gluteals, Calfs and Thoracic Spine. The spiky ball is excellent as getting to those stubborn “knots” in your muscles such as your rotator cuff, gluteals and foot muscles.

Any athlete either amateur or professional should have both a spiky ball and roller in their kit.

Ice and Wrap

On the topic of recovery, ice is well known as a beneficial modality to improve recovery after sport, both for injuries and athletic performance. Ice is essential in the first 24-48 hours (sometimes longer) for reducing the inflammation in joints/muscles following injury. The ice enables the blood vessels to constrict which in turn reduces swelling.

The ice and wrap is a convenient product which you fill with ice and water. The insulated bag ensures that the cold lasts a lot longer than a bag of peas or gel ice pack. Coming with Velcro straps it is extremely functional and allows you to strap the ice to your body part rather than trying to hold it on with your hands.

MTM Physiotherapy Warwick stock all of the above mentioned products and your Physiotherapist would be happy to discuss these with you.
